Art Exhibition - 30th April 2010 to 3rd May 2010
WITH nearly 300 pictures from almost 70 amateur artists and photographers, the club's four-day art exhibition over the May bank holiday was a great success
The exhibition at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School was the first the club had organised and it raised well over £2,000 for the club's charity fund. The event drew praise from both visitors and exhibitors - who included the artistic wives of Rotarians from both of the city's two clubs. Yet another exhibitor was Derek Curtis, from the Pontefract club. Organising committee chairman, Canon Roger Cressey, said: "We were absolutely delighted with the response we had from artists across the whole of West Yorkshire.
"Pictures were in a wide range of mediums covering all sorts of subjects, including local views, with prices ranging from £20 to £500. This meant there was something to suit everyone's pocket."
The event was launched with a preview evening attended by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield, Coun Tony Wallis and Doreen Wallis, and district governor Em Lloyd-Davies. An added attraction the next day was a demonstration by well-known Yorkshire watercolourist Les Packham. The picture he produced was later sold in a silent auction.
Money raised came from hanging fees, catalogue sales, raffles and a percentage of picture sales.
